Protect Yourself Against Phishing

If a stranger walked up to you and asked you for your credit card, would you give it to him?

You probably realize that this scenario is ridiculous, that you should never give a stranger access to your finances. However, when a stranger sends an email asking for sensitive personal information, far too many people respond, providing their credit card numbers, passwords and other important information.

A Glimpse Into the Future

On May 14, 2007, Jaikumar Vijayan, writing for Computerworld, reported on what may be a look at the future for retailers in the United States.

The article, “Texas mulls bill that would make PCI requirements a state law,” states:

The state’s House of Representatives last week voted 139-0 in favor of a bill that would formally codify PCI requirements into a state law that merchants would be obliged to comply with if passed. Under HB 3222 a breached entity will have to reimburse banks and credit unions the cost associated with blocking and reissuing cards if the merchant was not PCI compliant at the time of the compromise.

Personally, I view a unanimous vote proof that this legislative body is doing more than mulling a legal shift in liability to merchants of the State of Texas. Unless this legislation runs into unexpected opposition in the State Senate then law it will become.

Getting Ready for Generation Y

I guess it never occurred to me how many baby boomers would be eligible to retire in the next 10 years. I attended a HR seminar (Society of Human Resource Management’s Generalist Program in Las Vegas, April 19-20) a couple of weeks ago and when the instructor shot out the number of 78 million, it took my breath away. Meaning, 78 Million skilled/trained employees we are all highly dependent upon will be leaving the workforce.

TED Spreads Ideas

The annual TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference brings together some of the most influential thinkers of our time. Speakers have included Jane Goodall, Jeff Bezos, Ray Kurzweil, Kevin Kelly, Ze Frank, Dan Gilbert, and many more.

In their own words, “TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader”.

The yearly TED conference is invitation-only, costs $6,000 to attend and sells out a year in advance. Fortunately for us, TED exists to spread ideas, so videos of over 100 of the talks are now freely available on the TED site and may be viewed online or downloaded for future viewing.
