Benefiting from the Weaker Dollar

On November 1st 2007 the Canadian dollar hit a new all time high against the US dollar – coming in at 1.0592 US dollars. You’ve probably also heard that the US dollar is at historic lows versus many other major currencies – most notably the British Pound, the Euro, and the Australian dollar.

From an e-commerce perspective, the low dollar presents an unprecedented opportunity for online merchants to venture into the international marketplace. US based sellers can offer a significant price advantage – often totaling more than 40% – over the local choices available to shoppers in Canada, the UK and most of Europe. This price advantage is maintained even when taking into account any extra shipping costs, taxes, duties, etc. a cross border sale may entail.

PayPal at 2Checkout

This article, originally published October 29, 2007, has been updated today, October 30, 2007. Updates will appear in bold text.

By popular demand, 2Checkout will soon support now supports PayPal Express Checkout.

Suppliers have long been able to pay their 2CO set up fee with PayPal. Later this week Starting today, many customers will have the option to pay for their purchases with PayPal as well.

This will allow customers to pay for products and services with the funds in their PayPal account, even if the supplier does not have their own PayPal account and only uses 2Checkout.

The PayPal payment option will be available for all non-recurring orders in the following currencies:

  • Australian Dollar (AUD)
  • Canadian Dollar (CAD)
  • Euro (EUR)
  • British Pound (GBP)
  • Japanese Yen (JPY)
  • U.S. Dollar (USD)

Affiliate Program Beta Continues

We’re expanding the beta program now, so if you’ve been waiting for the second round, now’s the time to apply.

UPDATE:

February 18, 2009:  All 2Checkout suppliers may now enroll in the Affiliate Program and are no longer required to apply to be enrolled. To enroll in the Affiliate Program, suppliers will first need to agree to the new Terms of Service and Operating regulations for the program. To review and agree to the new Terms of Service and Operating Regulations, suppliers will need to login to their account using the New Vendors Administration area and then click the Affiliates tab on the account home page. Suppliers will then be able read and agree to the new documentation.

As part of our ongoing series of resources, we’re taking a break from technical resources to feature a couple business/financial resources.

  • Digital Transactions: Trends in the Electronic Exchange of Value – The online version of Digital Transactions is available only in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format, so we can’t link directly to articles, but one good one this month’s issue is Preparing for the Post-Check Future which is about the trend of consumers moving to e-checks and other electronic payment methods. Digital Transactions’ subscriptions are free and available via direct download in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format. They also provide weekly Web Transaction Performance Indexes.

Changes to the Purchase Pages

Changes to the 2Checkout purchase pages took place today. Vendors selling e-goods will notice the first change. Once an entry for your product has been added, The 2Checkout system allows you to add a return URL where the customer can download the product. This feature is now working correctly when customers purchase 2 or more products at the same time. When a customer does this they will be presented the 2Checkout Order Confirmation page at the end of the purchase process. On this page a “Click Here to Access Your Good” link is presented below the description of each of the products that were purchased. These links will open in a new window so your customer can access each e-good that they purchased separately. Also included in this change are some fixes to the coupon system. Coupons can now be used on 3rd party cart sales and sales that use the fixed parameter with no side effects. Coupons will also have no adverse effects on the Direct Return setting of your account.

New Feature: Control Demo From Inside Your 2Checkout Account

The ability to control the demo parameter has been added to the 2Checkout system. You can now choose from the following 3 options inside of your 2Checkout account to control the use of the Demo parameter. Those choices are:

  • On: Using this setting all sales will be treated as demo, regardless of any parameter value.
  • Off: Using this setting all sales will be treated as live, regardless of any parameter value.
  • Parameter: Using this setting a demo parameter sent to the purchase routine will control the demo setting.

This feature is located on the Site Management page in your account.  After you have logged in to your account you will first need to click the Account tab, and then click the Site Management sub tab on the Account page.

When using the Demo feature for testing purposes, please be certain to clear the cookies in your browser between tests to ensure the new account settings have been applied. For more information on clearing the cookies please click here.

Demo Parameter Changes

The way the demo parameter behaves has changed. The demo parameter can be passed to the purchase routine with 2 values: Y for demo mode or N for live sales mode. Now when you pass this parameter in with a value, that value is “Locked In” until the session is cleared by ending the sale or manually clearing the browser’s cache and cookies. This means that if a vendor passes in demo=N it is not possible to change it to a demo purchase once the customer has reached the 2Checkout page. Changing the URL to read demo=Y and reloading the URL will have no effect. Same goes for passing in Y. You will not be able to remove or edit the value.

If the demo parameter is not passed into the purchase routine you will be in live sales mode. Your purchase session will not be “locked in” to any mode so it would be possible to add the demo parameter, reload the URL and change the sales mode.

You can also turn the demo parameter on and off using the Demo Settings inside of your 2Checkout account. More information on how to do this can be found here.
