Please stop changing currency automatically.

Hi,

Seems like 2CO recently started automatically changing customer’s currency based on the country (IP). Please stop that (or make a per-account option NOT to) as we all know what your exchange rates are like.

My account has prices set in USD. Customer should be charged in USD unless he/she EXPLICITLY changes his/her currency into EUR, don’t change it for him/her automatically!

An example: customer should have been charged $468. He will be paying with PayPal and his PayPal account is in USD. But because 2CO automatically changed his currency into EUR (what the customer failed to notice) he was charged based on two lousy conversion rates (2CO changed $468 to EUR then PayPal changed his USD funds into EUR as well) and was charged $34 more than he should have been.

So, my request is – don’t change customer’s currency automatically (or provide a setting where we can turn this off for our account). If the prices are in USD the customer should be charged in USD unless he/she explicitly changes the currency to something else.

Thank you!

We automatically change the currency based on the customers IP address so that the customer knows their total up front. When a customer pays in a currency different than the one their credit card was issued in, the currency exchange rate is determined by the credit card company. This exposes the final charge to currency rate fluctuations and conversion fees that are unknown to the customer until it appears on their credit card statement. Thank you for your suggestion on offering a setting that provides the supplier with the ability to choose whether or not this automatic currency change occurs. I will pass your request to our developers for their consideration and will move this thread to the Feature Requests category so we can better track it.

I understand that Craig, but please note I am talking about PAYPAL payments here. If I set my prices in USD and customer wants to pay with his USD PayPal balance why automatically switch their currency to EUR so he gets charged exchange rates *twice* instead of *never*?

It’s hard to explain to a customer why he got billed $550 instead of the $500 the invoice said. Invoice said $500, 2CO changed that to EUR based on customer’s IP and the customer ended up paying $550 ($500 + 2CO USD to EUR fee + PayPal USD to EUR fee). If 2CO didn’t change the USD amount to EUR automatically none of this wouldn’t happen.

2 weeks ago I signed up with 2checkout, as the only second one allowing trading in my home country South Africa.

It took me while to find out by testing that currencies HAVE to be converted, to be then converted again. I am being an honest trader, and do believe in laws like the price you are charged must be the one displayed on the shelve. Using 2checkout causes heavy overcharging, or us traders to lose income. Whichever way you see it. The workaround of 2checkout having to use multiple checkout accounts for multiple currencies looks to me like a lame replacement of overcharging by holding multiple accounts money. Once again we lose.

In my right conscience as an honest trader, I could do nothing else than disable the module and be waiting for the third provider to come online. Very sad we have to be stuck with SetCom though. In this forum I can see a lot of “pass your request to our developers for their consideration”. I dont believe any if it as no follow ups are visible. The subject came up long ago, and if 2checkout wanted to act, they would update their customers on their issues.

Guys I cannot trade like this. I am out. Let me know when the system becomes useable and fair to all parties. Then I will come online again.

I agree – the customer should be charged in the currency he/she has been quoted in unless he/she specifically decides to change to a local currency.
