As a 2CO vendor, I’d like to be able to disable the Hacker Safe logo on order
pages. Is there currently an option to do that? If not, please consider adding
one. While we’re at it, other similar logos could be made optional, too.
I know that some of my website visitors might find this logo offensive as it
further popularizes the controversial modern mass-media definition of
hacker.

Hello Solar,
My belief is that the “Hacker Safe” logo would give customers a level of comfort knowing that they are ordering on our secure site that is tested daily. I know when I speak to customers they really appreciate that fact.

Hello Michael,
Thank you for your response. This is actually the kind of response I expected
to receive, but my request holds – I’d like to be able to disable that logo on
my order pages. Please consider implementing this functionality. Thanks again,
Alexander

Hello Alexander,
Noting the nature of your site, I understand your concern. The hacker/cracker debate has been going on for a long time, without much progress in reclaiming the much maligned term “hacker.” However, there are several reasons that we use that term.
1. It is the brand name of an actual service that we use to ensure the security of 2Checkout.com.
2. Use of the term “hacker” is identifiable by the largest cross section of the public, as opposed to the term “cracker” which is pretty much unknown to the outside world. That logo is designed so that the average folks of the world know that the site is safe, so it uses terminology that they recognize.
3. While the open source, software and hardware hackers (traditional use) of the world believe that those who breach security should be called crackers, the lawbreakers themselves have claimed the term hacker. It’s really hard to compete when there’s some guy on the news who cracked 150 sites saying, “I’m a hacker.”
From looking over your site, I understand where you’re coming from. It could be disconcerting to your visitors to have the word hacker misused.
While there is no way to disable the logo, even if there was I would recommend that you didn’t. As someone who knows how easily information can be intercepted on the internet, I personally would be happy to look past the misuse of the word hacker in order to know that my credit card number and other personal information was safe.
As a group of people who knows about computers and the importance of security, your visitors will likely find it reassuring that you are associated with a company that takes information security seriously.

Hello Julie,
Thank you for looking into this matter. I understand your arguments, yet I still want to disable the logo. Would it be any more convincing for you if I mention that RegNow, a leading shareware registration service, does allow their vendors to disable the Hacker Safe logo (with a simple checkbox in the vendor area)?
Also, I sure hope that you don’t rely on ScanAlert to ensure the security of your servers. There’s a lot more to security than the things ScanAlert tests for. I don’t feel any safer when I purchase from sites that have the Hacker Safe logo on them; I know how little it actually means. For example, one e-commerce site I had to purchase from runs on a system with cPanel – not something I would call safe for e-commerce – yet they feature the Hacker Safe logo.
ScanAlert / Hacker Safe is not about security. It is about “consumer trust and confidence in buying on the web.” I understand how it works for many online consumers – or at least that’s what many site admins think, which is enough for ScanAlert’s business success. I just don’t want to be involved.
Thanks again,
Alexander

@graphican – You cannot place the Hacker Safe logo on your site as it is the 2checkout.com domain that is certified by this company. You can place the credit card logos from the article below on your site.
