On June 20 this year, we celebrate our fathers and other important father figures in our lives. But when did Father’s Day start? In 1909, Mrs. John B. Dodd proposed the idea of a day to honor fathers. Her own father, William Smart was a widower who raised his six children alone on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. As is often the case, when Mrs. Dodd became an adult, she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.
